While listening to the radio the other day (like the old lady that I am), I heard the hosts talking about the 2019 songs of the summer. One of the songs that was brought up was “Señorita” by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. I hadn’t heard it, and when the host mentioned that the music video was on their Facebook page, I marked it on my “must-watch” list.
And I watched it. Twice. Okay, maybe three times. No more than four.
Even though this song has been out for a while, I figure the music video is still relevant if people are considering “Señorita” as one of the songs of the summer. Check out the video for yourself if you haven’t already and read on to see a few of the thoughts going through my mind when I clicked the “play” button.
- How come I don’t look as good as Shawn Mendes in a leather jacket? Is it his perfect hair? Toned muscles? The fact that he’s sitting on a motorcycle, and motorcycles are inherently hot? It has to be the motorcycle.
- Camila is ROCKING that uniform, even though the color is, what, a washed out salmony kind of color with an unfortunate little apron? Come on, what even is the purpose of an apron that small? However, despite my obvious distaste associated with her uniform, Camila is making diner-garb Fashion, with a capital “F.”
- SWEAT. LOOK AT THE SWEAT. They are both glistening and glowing, but if it were ME in Miami during the summer dressed in a leather jacket, there would be enough sweat pooling in my crevices that I would be giving the Everglades National Park a run for its money. None of this attractive dewiness that Camila and Shawn are both embodying, but swamp ass all the way.
- All I’m saying is that Shawn should ALWAYS be wearing tank tops. Red carpet? Tank top. Our first dinner date, wherein he falls madly in love with me and my razor-sharp wit? Tank top. Church with the family? Tank top, amen, and thanks be to god. Our wedding day? I suddenly don’t know what a tuxedo is. TANK TOP.
- Additionally, on the topic of appropriate summer wear, I seasonally reject the concept of wifebeaters as actual shirts. Usually, I stick to this rule as if it were written in the Bible itself. However, in Shawn’s case, I’m willing to make an exception, especially because a) I have already expressed my opinion about his biceps and b) he’s only wearing it for a couple seconds and removes it to sweat a little more while laying on top of Camila. Lucky girl.
- RED ALERT, RED ALERT. HE IS WEARING A HOOP EARRING. I REPEAT, HE IS WEARING A HOOP EARRING. Kind of like a hot Canadian pirate would, if hot Canadian pirates existed.
- I also guess I really did not know that Shawn Mendes is tall. In the video he is absolutely towering over Camila, which made me pause, open a new tab in my browser and shamelessly Google “how tall is Shawn Mendes.” For those of you as woefully ignorant as I was, he is 6’2”. Incredible.
- At this point, I’m nearing the end of the video, and it pops into my mind: I don’t actually really like this song. “Havana” by Camila and “Lost in Japan” by Shawn are both better songs by far, and honestly, musically, the two of them together in “Señorita” really is doing nothing for me, emotionally, spiritually, physically, etc. Now, the many shots of Shawn on a motorcycle? That’s a different story, but personally, I think the song itself is okay at best.
- There are a lot of clips of Camila running through the street in this music video and let me just say that it’s better her than me, because me and running don’t get along. And when I do run (usually to the fridge or away from commitment), I will tell you that I look nothing like Camila, with her long bangs seductively in her eyes, looking back at the camera sexily. I definitely add more of a heavy breathing element to it.
- Is anyone else getting High School Musical 2 “Bet on It” vibes from the clips at the end of Shawn singing dramatically on the edge of a lake? No? Just me, trying to connect everything I come across with Zac Efron? Yup, okay, cool.
All I’m really saying is that whether or not this song is one of the songs of the summer or not, its video definitely gave off just as much heat as this July sun. Well, if I’m going to sweat like a pig anyway, Shawn and Camila’s red-hot chemistry might as well be one of the reasons!
Your Overheated Servant,
Em
