1.1 In the Desert of Monotony, A Blog Appears.

I’m surprised I still have a decent grasp on the English language, since it’s been so long since I’ve really written anything.

I graduated from college at the beginning of May, and all I’ve really written since has been cover letters for my various job applications, and let me just tell you. Writing, “thank you for your consideration” and “portfolio and references upon request” and “please hire me, I’m tired of being broke” isn’t really as fulfilling as one might imagine.

Since my graduation, I’ve been stuck in a state of perpetual monotony (and brokeness). This blog is my attempt to get out of it.

So, I’ve decided to try my hand at blogging. This way, I can write about stuff I care about, people can (hopefully) read it, I get a break from the monotony of attempting to get a job and I also get to stay in the practice of creative writing. Keeps my wits sharp, you know.

I am calling this a “lifestyle” blog, but here’s a disclaimer. I don’t live in a sinfully fabulous city and wear clothes that are the perfect mix of bohemian and edgy, I don’t subscribe to a vegan diet, I don’t have a chic, minimalist, all-white motif and I don’t consider myself an expert on “living life to the fullest.”

As of right now, I don’t even have a damn job, for Pete’s sake.

What I do have, however, is a working laptop (despite its efforts to thwart me, damn you, HP!) and a lot to say. I enjoy writing about all sorts of topics: romance, relationships, fashion, wellness, fitness, pop culture and everything in between. All of that, to me, is “lifestyle.”

With my old job at the Roanoke College newspaper, I was writing to appeal to a specific crowd. The population at Roanoke was an interesting one, with lots of personality types to please. Frat boys with no brain cells, athletes I’m not sure could even read, those freaky-deaky theatre people, tortured writers, even more tortured musicians and the list literally GOES ON.

Here, though, it’s all about me. What interests me, what I want to talk about. Which, actually, was the whole reason why blogging tickled my fancy.

Here, I get to say what I want to say, my way.

So, buckle up, and in the immortal words of the Weather Girls, leave those umbrellas at home…

Your Creativity-Starved Servant,

Em

  1. YAS KWEEN! We haven’t talked in a minute (even though I have been following your tea servings all through uni), but nonetheless I’m so proud of you. Go on and show them what’s good, sis!
